A prerequisite in the transition away from traditional telecom networks is the ability to deliver carrier grade synchronization over packet networks.

Developers, field engineers, network analysts, and others need to develop a new set of skills and resources to plan, test, and troubleshoot packet network environments. The Precision Time Protocol (IEEE 1588-2008, or PTP) provides the underlying technology for establishing precise and accurate time for wireless and wireline networks based on packet switched protocols, but additional capabilities are needed.

This white paper focuses on emerging new solutions for measuring packet synchronization and the requirements needed to ensure a consistent, predictable, measurable level of PTP network quality
