News In Brief: Verizon Wireless, MySpace Music, SmarTone, Dell, Avaya, Google

Verizon Wireless has sacked more employees from its 2008 acquisition Alltel Corp. The latest round of redundancies includes finance, marketing and legal staff. Verizon has yet to reveal the total number affected. It cut 200 Alltel positions in the first half.

 

MySpace Music has secured a global licensing deal with independent labels represented by Merlin. While details of the deal were not disclosed the deal will allow Merlin to “benefit from the financial growth of MySpace Music” as part of a “growth participation plan.”

 

SmarTone-Vodafone will launch its 3G service in Macau next year with Nokia Siemens Networks supplied -IP HSPA+ network. The new turnkey network – which is intended to replace SmarTone’s existing GSM network in Macau – will comprise just over 200 base stations with peak data throughput speeds of 21 Mbps, and upgradeable to 42 Mbps.

 

Avaya has received clearance from the European Commission to acquire Nortel’s enterprise solutions business. Avaya expects to close the transaction in December 2009.

 

Google has revamped the mobile version of its Google News site for iPhone, Android and Palm Pre handsets.
