Telefonica aims to add 50m customer access points in Latin America over the next three years, according to local reports citing Telefónica Latinoamérica chairman José María Álvarez Pallete.

Data centre firm Equinix has doubled its European footprint with the opening of its 50^th international business exchange, sited in London and offering 27,800 sq m gross space.

Nokia Siemens Networks has developed a technology it says can cut the number of transceivers required on an optical network by 75% for links shorter than 40km. The HECTO project was developed with funding from the EU.

Alcatel-Lucent has launched Mobilefriends, an SMS-based social networking tool, in France. A similar service in Switzerland has 10,000 users.

ZTE says it is selling the world’s fastest HSPA+ data card through Greek carrier COSMOTE. The MF662 combines HSPA and MIMO technologies to offer data rates of 28.8 Mbps in the downlink.
