Facebook remains the most popular social networking site for mobile users, despite rival Twitter enjoying a 347% rise in the number of subscribers accessing the site on their phone.
Figures from ComScore show 4.7 million users accessed Twitter from their phone in January, up from 1.1 million in January 2009. However, the figure is still dwarfed by Facebook, which saw mobile access grow 112% to 25.1 million users year-on-year.
Mobile access to the sites has been boosted by increased sales of smartphones, ComScore notes, with 30% of smartphone users logging on via their mobile browser, compared to 6.8% of feature phone users.
However, that trend hasn’t helped rival site MySpace, which experienced a 7% fall to 11.4 million users year-on-year.
“Social networking remains one of the most popular and fastest-growing behaviours on both the PC-based Internet and the mobile Web,” ComScore president for mobile Mark Donovan said.
“Social media is a natural sweet spot for mobile since mobile devices are at the centre of how people communicate with their circle of friends.”
