The head of Italy’s post office says it would be keen to take over the fixed-line assets of Telecom Italia, if the incumbent operator is split up.

Massimo Sarmi, CEO of Poste Italiane, told Italian daily Il Sole 24 Ore his firm would be interested in the telco’s fixed-line business if it was separated from the wireless division, Reuters reports.

The admission will stoke the fires of speculation regarding a potential merger of Telecom Italia with Spanish rival Telefonica.

Last month, Italy’s government denied it had approved a deal on condition Telecom Italia’s fixed line assets remained under the control of an Italian firm.
