Ericsson to showcase 84-Mbps HSPA next week

Ericsson will showcase the first 84-Mbps HSPA network at a series of exclusive events during next week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The firm - which showed off a 42-Mbps HSPA network at last year's event, and a 56-Mbps network at CITA in Las Vegas – will demonstrate the network at invitation-only briefings during MWC, ahead of planned deployments from 1H11.

Ericsson's head of radio development, Marie Westrin, said the network had been designed to meet the rapidly expanding requirements of modern mobile broadband users.

“Our driving force is to fulfil consumers' need to [engage in] social networking, online gaming and video conferencing, just to mention a few services, on the move,” she said.

Late last month, 3 Scandinavia contracted Ericsson to deploy the first commercial 84-Mbps HSPA network. The rollout will be conducted simultaneously in Denmark and four major cities in Sweden, with work to commence this quarter.
