The mobile community might be gearing up for LTE, but Ericsson is about to build what it says the world’s first 84 Mbps HSPA network.
The HSPA rollout for 3 in Denmark and Sweden would boost the networks’ notional top speeds of 21 Mbps fourfold,
Ericsson said Wednesday. The networks will be rolled out nationwide in Denmark and in four major cities in Sweden.
Ericsson said the three-year contract includes the upgrade of the existing 3G network, via 42Mbps, to 84Mbps, and IP-based optical and microwave backhaul. It will also supply Sweden’s first W-CDMA/HSPA network on the 900 MHz band to boost coverage.
Rollout will start in the first quarter of 2010.
3’s rival TeliaSonera has already issued contracts to Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks for its first LTE rollout in Stockholm and Oslo.
